If you’re thinking about a breast augmentation revision, you’re not alone. Many women come to my practice after their initial augmentation with new goals—whether it’s to increase their implant size, update older implants, or address changes that have occurred over time.

Revision breast augmentation is a highly personalized procedure, and I’m here to help guide you through what to expect. Below, I answer some of the most common questions I hear from patients during consultations.

If you’re curious about whether you’re a good candidate for the surgery, I have another informative blog post all about how to know if you need breast revision.

How Soon After Breast Augmentation Can I Get a Revision?

Generally, I recommend waiting at least 6 months to a year after your original augmentation before considering a revision. This gives your body time to fully heal and your implants time to settle, so we can clearly evaluate your results and plan for the next steps.

If I Get Breast Augmentation Revision To Go Bigger, Will I Need a Lift, Too?

Not always, but larger implants are heavier, so it’s a consideration we’ll evaluate together. If your skin has stretched significantly or your implants are sitting low on your chest, I may recommend a breast lift at the same time to enhance your final results. Remember, breast implants do not really lift the breast or nipple position. My goal is always to help you achieve the look you want with a natural shape and long-lasting outcome.

Will Recovery From Breast Augmentation Revision Feel Different Than My First Surgery?

Yes, breast revision recovery is different from your initial augmentation. In some cases, patients find recovery from breast augmentation revision to be quicker—especially if we’re working within the existing implant pocket and not addressing other concerns. However, if we’re changing the implant size significantly, correcting complications like capsular contracture or implant malposition, recovery may be slightly more involved.

In most cases, you can expect:

  • Mild to moderate swelling and soreness
  • A return to light activity within a week
  • A full return to strenuous activity after 3 to 4 weeks

I’ll customize your recovery plan based on your surgical details and personal needs.

How Long Does Breast Revision Surgery Take?

The surgical time varies depending on your specific case. For a straightforward size increase, surgery may take about 1 to 2 hours. More complex revisions—such as those involving capsule work, internal pocket adjustments or breast lift—can take longer. During your consultation, I’ll walk you through exactly what your surgery will involve.

Is Breast Revision More Expensive Than a First-Time Augmentation?

In many cases, yes—breast revision surgery can be more expensive than your original augmentation. That’s because revisions often require more surgical expertise, longer operating time, and sometimes specialized techniques or materials. We’ll discuss your customized quote at your consultation so you know exactly what to expect.

Can I Have My Teeth Cleaned After Breast Revision Surgery?

This is a surprisingly common question! You should wait at least 4 weeks before any dental cleanings or procedures after surgery. This reduces the risk of bacteria entering your bloodstream during recovery, which could potentially affect your implants. As a precaution, let your dentist know about your recent surgery.

What Is Explant Surgery?

Explant surgery is a breast augmentation revision procedure in which implants are removed without replacement; it’s a procedure I perform often. Whether you’re experiencing complications, your aesthetic goals have changed, or you simply want a smaller look, I can help you remove your implants safely and reshape your breasts for the best possible appearance. Some patients also choose to pair their explant with a lift for added support and contour.
