Dermal Fillers

Women and men seeking to restore their skin’s youthful, smooth appearance get injectable fillers, such as Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® products at our Toledo, Ohio, practice. Dr. Craig Colville is among the first plastic surgeons in the region to offer the newest generation of fillers, which include JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC, JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC, and JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC. Gel fillers replenish facial volume and are a nonsurgical alternative to plastic surgery.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

Injectable fillers work by restoring volume to areas of the face, temples, and lips where aging saps the youthful, smooth appearance of your skin. Many of these gel fillers contain hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural complex sugar found in all living cells. HA retains water like a sponge, absorbing more than 1,000 times its weight. This helps to attract or maintain water, hydrating your skin and increasing its volume and density. Among the facial fillers offered by Dr. Colville are products from JUVÉDERM, BELOTERO BALANCE®, and Restylane.

What Fillers Are Right for Me?

Advanced fillers introduced in recent years are designed to address specific treatment areas. The all‐purpose fillers can still produce good results, but the newest fillers are formulated so that the consistency of the gel is more appropriate for the area being treated.

The fillers offered by Dr. Colville include:

JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC

Lips may be naturally thin or can lose volume with age. Ultra XC adds fullness to thin lips, creating a more sensuous and youthful‐looking mouth. The injectable gel filler produces results which look natural and last up to a year. Like other products in the JUVÉDERM family of fillers, Ultra XC is pre‐mixed with a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort during the injections.

JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC

This hyaluronic acid filler is formulated with larger particles than JUVÉDERM Ultra, which produces results that last longer. Ultra Plus XC is a soft filler that is an excellent option for treating nasolabial folds and smoothing lines at the corners of the mouth.

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC

VOLUMA XC is the first filler approved by the FDA to help lift and contour the cheek area. Allergan developed VOLUMA to restore lost facial volume in the cheeks, cheekbones, and chin. While wrinkle fillers like JUVÉDERM Ultra offer excellent results when applied to fine lines and wrinkles, JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC is better suited to larger‐scale facial volumizing. It was developed to be smoother than other hyaluronic acid facial volumizers. The results can last up to 24 months.

JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC

Using hyaluronic acid, the same active ingredient present in many dermal fillers, JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA XC has a unique formulation (VYCROSS® technology) designed to add soft volume and shape to lips while smoothing away fine lip lines. Whether you have naturally thin lips or your lips have lost definition with age, VOLBELLA can create a fuller, hydrated look without surgery or scars.

JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC

The newest filler developed by Allergan also uses the proprietary VYCROSS technology, which produces longer‐lasting results that look natural. Patients with concerns about lines and wrinkles in the lower face, such as “smile lines,” nasolabial folds, and marionette lines, are good candidates for VOLLURE injections. VOLLURE is a well‐balanced filler specifically tailored with a unique balance of gel firmness and cohesivity for corrections in the lower face. The results can last up to 18 months, which is longer than any other injectable for nasolabial folds.

Sculptra® Aesthetic

Sculptra is one of the non‐HA fillers offered by Dr. Colville. It is made with poly‐L‐lactic acid, a substance that actually stimulates collagen growth to minimize the visibility of smile lines, restore facial volume, and reduce wrinkles on the sides of the mouth (marionette lines) and chin wrinkles. Results appear more gradually after several treatment sessions and can last up to 2 years.

BELOTERO BALANCE®

Thinner than other HA fillers, BELOTERO BALANCE is used to treat the very thin, superficial, delicate lines that develop above and around the lips. Many of our patients enjoy the results for up to 6 months, depending on the specific area treated.

RADIESSE®

This filler uses calcium hydroxyapatite, a material that is best‐suited for filling deeper folds and boosting areas where the structure and volume have been depleted. Additionally, RADIESSE rejuvenates the backs of the hands, an area often overlooked by patients. Shown to last at least a year, RADIESSE contributes to increased collagen within the deeper layers of the skin, allowing for long‐lasting and natural‐looking results.

Restylane® Lyft

This is an option for restoring volume to the cheek area. Restylane Lyft is approved by the FDA to not only lift the cheeks, but also restore volume and smooth smile lines.

Restylane® Silk

Restylane Silk was the first filler approved by the FDA that’s specifically designed to enhance lips and to smooth wrinkles around the mouth. Silk can create the ideal lip shape and produces results that look naturally luscious. Silk uses smaller, smoother particles than those found in other Restylane products.

Restylane® Kysse

This filler adds volume to the lips and enhances their color and texture with longer-lasting results than Silk. It is specially formulated to allow the lips to move naturally when speaking and during expression.

Best Lip Fillers

We use the following fillers for lip injections to add volume and definition to the lips and smooth away vertical lip lines:

  • Restylane Silk lasts about 6 months.
  • Restylane Kysse lasts up to a year.
  • JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA lasts up to a year.
  • JUVÉDERM Ultra lasts up to a year.

Dr. Colville can also use fat transfer to enhance the lips by purifying fat he removes with liposuction. Final results can last for years.

It’s important to avoid putting pressure on the lips (such as kissing) for about 3 days after treatment to allow the filler to settle into place and retain the desired shape and fullness.

What Is a Liquid Facelift?

Dermal filler and BOTOX injections are typically used to address different concerns. Fillers restore volume in facial folds, around the eyes, and on the cheeks and temples. BOTOX smooths away lines and wrinkles caused by repeated facial muscle contractions. By performing these treatments together, we can provide a more complete facial rejuvenation than with either on its own. This combination treatment, often called a liquid facelift, can be a nonsurgical alternative to a facelift for people with early signs of facial aging.

What Is a Nonsurgical Rhinoplasty?

A nonsurgical rhinoplasty, also called a liquid rhinoplasty, involves using dermal filler injections to make subtle changes to the shape of the nose. This treatment may be a good choice for people who want an alternative to surgical rhinoplasty that can enhance the bridge or tip, improve symmetry, or make another temporary improvement. Liquid rhinoplasty cannot make the nose smaller or improve breathing. There are no incisions, anesthesia, or downtime needed.

Your Dermal Filler Treatment

Injectable treatments are performed in our office as outpatient procedures, meaning you’ll return home or to work following the injections. Most appointments for fillers last less than 30 minutes, although they can be longer if you combine other nonsurgical procedures, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, with the injections. Combining procedures can often lead to a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

Virtually all fillers are pre‐mixed with lidocaine, a local anesthetic, to help minimize any discomfort associated with the injections. We also apply a topical anesthetic before making the injections. Little to no downtime is needed and many patients return to their daily routines immediately following their treatments. Bruising or swelling may occur and last for hours or days, but these are concealed with makeup.

How Long After Fillers Do You See Results?

Virtually all fillers produce results that are almost immediately noticeable. The primary exception is Sculptra Aesthetic, which is designed to gradually improve volume after a series of treatments performed over the course of several months.

How Long Do Fillers Last?

Depending on the filler or fillers used and the areas treated, the results usually last between 6 months and 2 years. One of the benefits of using hyaluronic acid fillers is that the results can be reversed if a patient isn’t satisfied with the outcome. Injecting a substance called hyaluronidase dissolves HA fillers.
