Is a Mommy Makeover Just for Mothers?

3 women considering the benefits of mommy makeover.

Patients often ask me whether a mommy makeover is just for moms. The short answer to that question is no. Women’s bodies change as life goes on, whether you’re experiencing weight loss, weight gain, or post-pregnancy issues. I’ve even had a patient ask about having a “menopause makeover.” All of these body changes can be addressed in a customized combination of procedures called a mommy makeover.

In this blog post, I’ll discuss what goes into a mommy makeover and explain why patients of all ages can benefit from its comprehensive approach.

What is a mommy makeover?

There is no one specific mommy makeover; it’s a combination of surgeries and other body contouring procedures that address multiple issues a patient may have. For example, you may have breast concerns that require surgery and excess fat that can be resolved with nonsurgical treatments such as CoolSculpting. (You can read more about CoolSculpting vs. liposuction for excess fat deposits in another blog post.) Other mommy makeovers may be comprised entirely of surgical procedures.

Typical mommy makeovers include surgeries such as a tummy tuck, a body lift, or liposuction. Breast enhancement procedures are nearly always part of a mommy makeover, whether it’s a breast augmentation, a breast lift, a breast augmentation with a lift, or a breast reduction. When these procedures are combined appropriately, the entire body and torso can be rejuvenated at once, creating noticeable life-changing results.

Who are good mommy makeover candidates?

A mommy makeover is a good choice for women who are done having children and are unlikely to undergo any other significant body changes in the near future.

In general, these women are healthy, and they may have undergone significant weight loss. They would like to lift, contour, and regain their figure.

Is there a similar combination procedure for men?

A “daddy do-over” combines multiple body contouring procedures, such as liposuction of the chest, abdomen, or hip rolls and/or trimming of the breast or abdominal area.

What is mommy makeover recovery like?

Recovering from a mommy makeover or any multiple-procedure torso rejuvenation surgery depends a lot on the combination of the procedures. In general, I tell my patients to plan to be away from work for at least 2 to 3 weeks. If your job requires heavy lifting work, you may have to be away from work for a longer period or return to only lighter duties.

At about 2 weeks, you’ll be fairly independent and moving around on your own. If your mommy makeover included a tummy tuck or other muscle-tightening procedure, don’t expect to lift heavy objects for about 6 weeks.  The American Society of Plastic Surgeons offers additional information about mommy makeover recovery that you may find helpful.

Body contouring offers a relatively easy recovery period. You may have a bit longer recovery period if your abdominal wall muscle is tightened with a tummy tuck.

The breast aspect of a mommy makeover involves a shorter recovery time since I use a rapid recovery process. With breast-only procedures, you can shower on the day of surgery, go out to dinner, and lift your hands and arms above your shoulders. You can resume moderate activity in the gym in about 3 weeks.

What can you expect with a mommy makeover?

There are many versions of body contouring and rejuvenation procedures that can be combined in a mommy makeover, a menopause makeover, a daddy do-over, or a post-weight loss surgery. You can see more of my patients’ results in their before-and-after photos. These photos can give you an idea of what to expect.
