If you’re considering surgical breast enhancement, you’re probably wondering what the breast lift recovery time looks like—and how it might impact your daily routine. The good news is that recovery from breast lift surgery is surprisingly quick and relatively easy, especially when performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through what to expect during each stage of recovery, provide breast lift recovery tips, and explain how your experience may differ if you combine your lift with breast implants.
What Happens During Breast Lift Surgery?
A breast lift, or mastopexy, reshapes and elevates the breasts by removing excess skin and repositioning the nipple to a more youthful height. I often describe the procedure as “recontouring the envelope”—we’re not adding volume (unless implants are included), but rather refining the breast’s shape and position.
Breast Lift Recovery Time: What You Can Expect
Recovery is one of the most reassuring aspects of breast lift surgery, so long as you remain patient and follow all of your postoperative instructions closely. Here’s how a breast lift recovery typically unfolds, week by week.
Day of Surgery
You’ll wake up from your procedure with light dressings and sealed incisions. I use stitches beneath the skin topped with surgical glue, which acts as a waterproof barrier. Many patients are surprised at how comfortable they feel immediately after surgery. Prescription pain medication may be offered, but over-the-counter options are usually enough.
Days 1 and 2
Thanks to the waterproof glue protecting your incisions, you’ll be able to shower the next day. Some women choose to wear a soft sports-type bra for a few weeks, both during the day and at night, while others don’t.
Days 3 to 7
Most patients return to desk work or light activities within 2 to 3 days. You’ll likely feel well enough to move around normally, though you should avoid any heavy lifting or strenuous exercise. You may have mild swelling and bruising, but these typically resolve quickly.
Week 2
The surgical glue will begin to peel or flake off naturally around this time. Your incisions should be nearly closed, and any lingering swelling should be minimal. You can resume light cardio activities (like walking) if you feel ready. This is the end of the initial recovery stage for most patients.
Weeks 3 and 4
Patients often feel “back to normal” by now. By this point, most women are back at the gym and may be cleared for driving longer distances or returning to more demanding work duties.
Weeks 5 and 6
Your incisions will continue to fade, and your final breast shape will begin to take form. If you were wearing a supportive bra 24/7, you may now be able to switch to a more traditional option, depending on your surgeon’s recommendation.
Breast Lift Recovery Tips
To ensure a smooth healing process, keep the following tips in mind:
- Sleep on your back with your upper body slightly elevated for the first few weeks.
- Avoid underwire bras until your incisions are fully healed.
- Stay hydrated and follow a nutritious diet to support tissue repair.
- Protect your incisions from sun exposure, which can darken scars.
- Keep follow-up appointments so we can monitor your progress.
Everyone’s healing experience is a bit different, but most of my patients report little to no pain and a fast return to daily life.

Breast Lift Recovery With Implants
If you’re having a breast lift with implants, your recovery may be slightly more involved. Breast implants add volume as well as weight and fullness in the chest. Here’s how the stages shift:
- Increased tightness: You may feel more chest pressure, especially in the first 7 to 10 days.
- Longer restriction period: You may need to wait 3 to 4 weeks before resuming upper-body exercise.
- Implant settling: It can take a few months for implants to “drop and fluff” into their final position.
Even with these differences, breast lift with implants recovery still allows you to return to non-physical work within a week and feel significantly better by the end of the second week.
