The Unexpected Benefits of a Tummy Tuck

A woman pleased with her tummy tuck results.

A persistent tummy pooch can be frustrating, especially if you’re faithfully exercising and maintaining a healthy diet. Tummy tuck surgery is an excellent way for men and women to lose that stubborn belly pooch, contour their bodies, and remove loose, excess skin.

But those aren’t the only advantages of a tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty. Patients can expect other, less well-known benefits, too.

Get rid of unwanted scars and tattoos

During a tummy tuck, excess skin is stretched and removed from the midsection. If you have any unwanted scars, stretch marks, or tattoos in this area, they will probably be removed during the tummy tuck. If you’re concerned about a specific tattoo or area, though, be sure to ask your doctor if it can be addressed with your surgery.

Shape a better bellybutton

Your doctor makes an incision around your bellybutton during tummy tuck surgery. As the skin is re-draped in the mid-section and lower abdomen, your surgeon can also change the appearance or placement of the bellybutton. Sometimes, your surgeon can put your navel more in the middle of your mid-section to create an appealing abdomen.

Your surgeon may also be able to change the shape of your navel or create a bellybutton that has less hooding or is more inward in appearance.

Reduce back pain

Excess skin can add unnecessary weight and stress to your body, especially your back. If excess skin and/or subcutaneous tissue or fat is removed at the time of the abdominoplasty, back pain can be relieved or reduced. This can help diminish back pain, and it may improve your overall posture.

Make exercise more enjoyable

Exercise and diet alone won’t tighten loose skin; it will only deflate the skin as you lose weight and firm up those underlying muscles. Exercise may make you feel better, physically and emotionally, but it won’t tighten your skin. The tummy tuck surgical procedure alone or as part of a mommy makeover can tighten the muscle wall, flattening the abdomen. Removing unwanted tissue and tightening the muscle wall during surgery will make you feel lighter and more comfortable. And you’ll be better able to move around during exercise and activities such as swimming, yoga, or even jogging.
