How Does CoolSculpting Work?

Nonsurgical fat reduction with no downtime almost sounds too good to be true, but the science behind the process, cryolipolysis, is proven and clinically tested. Researchers discovered that fat cells are more vulnerable to cold than other kinds of cells. Through controlled cooling of fatty tissue at temperatures that don’t damage the skin or surrounding tissue, CoolSculpting breaks down and destroys fat cells. Damaged cells are then removed from the body through its natural cleansing process over the course of a few months.

What Areas Does CoolSculpting Treat?

CoolSculpting can target fat in the following areas:

  • Abdomen
  • Flanks
  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Back
  • Bra fat
  • Male chest
  • Upper arms
  • Double Chin

CoolSculpting treatments are an ideal nonsurgical alternative to liposuction for many patients who would rather avoid the downtime of surgery.

Your CoolSculpting Procedure

A CoolSculpting treatment can be performed at any time that’s convenient for you. Because it is nonsurgical and doesn’t require downtime, you can return to your normal activities immediately after leaving Dr. Colville’s practice.

A CoolSculpting procedure begins after you’ve identified the area or areas of your body to be treated. An applicator is positioned over your skin while you’re lying down or comfortably reclined, and the controlled cooling process begins. The applicator we use depends on whether the area you want to target has “pinchable” or “non-pinchable” fat.

Which CoolSculpting Applicator Works for You?

CoolFit®: The original CoolSculpting applicator, the CoolFit, is designed for treating “pinchable fat,” such as on the abdomen. It uses vacuum suction to pull fatty tissue between cooling plates. Treatments take about 1 hour per area.

CoolSmooth PRO™: Patients can treat areas of “non-pinchable” fat, such as along their inner or outer thighs, thanks to the CoolSmooth PRO applicator. The CoolSmooth PRO applicator’s panels are strapped against the skin, and its flat design adheres comfortably to effectively freeze and destroy the fat cells. Treatments with this applicator take 2 hours per area.

CoolAdvantage™: As the name suggests, CoolAdvantage builds on the benefits of CoolSculpting, and its design means that more patients than ever are good candidates. With larger applicators and a colder operating temperature, CoolAdvantage is even faster, and it allows us to treat larger areas, such as the inner or outer thighs. Patients say it’s more comfortable, too.

CoolMini™: This applicator is designed with a specific region in mind: the neck fat under the chin. As with the other applicators, it sits snugly against the skin, and its design makes unwanted double chin fat treatable. Another non-surgical treatment option is KYBELLA®, which can reduce fat under the chin with a series of injections.

Patients may use their cellphones, laptops, or tablets with the practice Wi-Fi, enjoy Apple TV, or simply relax during their treatment. Sessions are tailored to meet each person’s needs. With each treatment, a fat reduction of about 20% to 25% can be expected in the area. Patients often request additional CoolSculpting treatments to get the desired results.

How Does CoolSculpting Compare With Liposuction?

CoolSculpting is growing in popularity and beginning to become one of the main treatments for fat reduction, along with liposuction surgery. Dr. Colville offers both treatments. Our comparison chart can help you determine which might be right for you.

CoolSculptingLiposuction
NonsurgicalSurgical
No anesthesia neededLocal anesthesia with sedation needed
Treats the upper and lower abdomen, flanks, hips, inner and outer thighs, back, bra fat, male chest, upper arms, and double chinTreats nearly anywhere on the body, including the abdomen, buttocks, chest, back, upper arms, waist, thighs, hips, neck, and under the chin
Reduces fat by about 20% to 25% per areaCan reduce larger volumes of fat
No downtime necessaryDowntime necessary
Results develop in 2 to 3 monthsResults are immediate, but swelling takes weeks to fade
Multiple treatments sometimes necessaryMultiple treatments rarely necessary

Both liposuction and CoolSculpting are meant as body contouring procedures and not weight-loss treatments. They are best for patients who are near their ideal weight but are struggling with stubborn areas of localized fat. Dr. Colville can help you decide which treatment is best for you.

How Long Does It Take to See CoolSculpting Results?

After a CoolSculpting treatment, fat cells die off gradually, so the results are not immediately apparent. Some of our patients begin seeing results about 3 weeks after their treatments as the body flushes away fat cells. More dramatic results are typically seen after about 2 months, and the process continues for up to 6 months after the procedure.

These results can last indefinitely so long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

CoolSculpting FAQ

Is CoolSculpting safe?

CoolSculpting is an FDA-cleared procedure that is considered safe when performed by a trained and experienced practitioner.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on how your body responds and the amount of fat you want to address. During your consultation, your provider will give you an estimate of the number of sessions that will likely be required to give you the results you want.

How long should I wait between sessions?

It takes about 2 months to see how much a treated area slims down, so you should wait at least that long to have additional sessions on a specific area.

How many inches can you lose with CoolSculpting?

Patients can expect to lose about 20% to 25% of the fat in the area with each treatment. The amount you can expect to lose in inches will vary with treatment areas and the number of CoolSculpting treatments you have.

Does CoolSculpting tighten the skin?

CoolSculpting is great for fat reduction, but it does not tighten the skin. Dr. Colville offers a minimally invasive skin tightening treatment called ThermiTight® that can complement CoolSculpting results.

Does it actually work?

In clinical studies, the technology CoolSculpting uses was determined to reduce fat under the skin in treated areas by up to 25%, and 86% of treated subjects saw improvement. We do not edit our before & after photos, so we encourage you to take a look.
