Breast Augmentation: Where To Begin

Craig W. Colville MD, FACS

Breast augmentation is one of the top 5 cosmetic surgical procedures across the nation, with nearly 200,000 people choosing to have the procedure in 2020. A great deal of information has been written on this popular plastic surgery and breast implant options. Every surgeon’s approach to the procedure can be a little bit different, so let’s talk about what my breast augmentation patients from Toledo, Sandusky, Ann Arbor, and beyond can expect.

What Breast Implants Look the Best for You and Your Lifestyle?

Early in the process of a patient deciding on a breast augmentation, I like to have the patient concentrate more on the type of look that they want rather than the type of implant or a specific aspect of surgery. Some of the questions I ask patients during their consultation are:

  • How do you want to look?
  • What type of lifestyle do you have?
  • What type of clothing do you want to wear?
  • How do you want a dress to fit?
  • How proportionate do you want to look in clothing, in a little less clothing or no clothing?

Those are the things that are most important. I ask patients to look at their breasts and to tell me what they like and what they would like to change. Sometimes patients notice that they are unhappy with the lower aspect of breast, but in actuality, the center and upper aspect of the breast is either lacking volume, projection, or firmness. It is imperative that all questions and concerns are addressed in the consultation. Read our related blog post for more information on the 5 things you should tell your surgeon.

What Is the Surgical Process for Breast Augmentation?

When it comes to surgery, the exact surgical method, procedure, and the type of implant for a breast augmentation will be different for each patient. I cover these details during the consultation process.

In addition to a full discussion and exam, I utilize Vectra 3D imaging so the patient can see their own body transformed with different implant shapes, sizes, and projections. This imaging can help the patient make a more educated decision on what type of implant they would like to have.

Researching Breast Augmentation

In terms of the patient doing research on the topic of breast augmentation, there are several helpful sources. First, I encourage the patient to read about breast augmentation on my website and blog and look at my patients’ breast augmentation before and after photos below and in my gallery.

In addition, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has numerous articles and information available. The Plastic Surgery Channel (of which I am a member) has helpful videos on all aspects of the subject of breast augmentation surgery. Also, always seek a physician who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Ultimately, my goal is to help patients make an educated decision on the look and type of implant they would like to use for their breast augmentation surgery. All of the sources listed above are great tools to use when studying the topic of a breast augmentation. However, a consultation is the best place to start your breast augmentation journey so the information you receive is specific to you and your goals.
